Onion (Allium cepa), also known as an onion or common onion, is used as a vegetable and is the most commonly grown species of the genus Allium. Most onion varieties contain about 89% water, 4% sugar, 1% protein, 2% fiber and 0.1% fat. They are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and folic acid and are a good source of dietary fiber. They are very low in fat and sodium, and their energy value is 166 kJ (40 kcal) per 100 g (3.5 ounces) of serving, they can give their taste to spicy dishes without increasing calories in any way.
