Melissa is derived from the common name Melissa Officinalis and is the known elixir of life of the alchemist Parakelsu. In the middle Ages it is said that alchemists used melissa to make elixirs of youth. The essential oil of Melissorthon comes from the steam distillation of its leaves grown in Xirolimni Kozani in a perfectly natural way. It has a soft and warm scent, with a touch of honey. It is very rare and usually occurs in a mixture with other oils similar in properties.The essential oil of Melissa has anti-aging and anti-wrinkle properties. It is used in aromatherapy for nervousness, tension, stress, insomnia, infections, fungal infections, eczema, herpes and illnesses. Also, it is used as an antidepressant, antiseptic, bactericidal, sedative, hypnotic, antihypertensive, combats irritability while relaxing the mind and benefiting the cardiovascular system.
Its tonic properties are beneficial for the cardiovascular system, reduce high blood pressure, have a general tonic effect on the heart and regulate rapid breathing. It also regulates the digestive system, helps in nausea and indigestion. Relieves from stress, nervous tension and insomnia.
At psychological level it is extremely hypnotic and brings optimism. Melissa’s essential oil is extremely expensive and is not widely used. It is usually found in the form of a mixture with other base-like properties, e.g. 5% Melissa oil in 10 ml jojoba oil.
