Peanuts: world market news

High indicators of the global peanut market of the past season will continue this year.

Argentina lost 47,000 ha of peanut harvest due to the rains in 2016, plus the collected peanuts had significant quality losses. Despite this, the producers are determined to increase the production of peanuts this year, with an emphasis on international markets. However, in the process of preparing for the sowing season in 2017, rental prices for land jumped from $525 to $900/ha, which would cause a significant increase in peanut purchase prices for farmers. Although Argentine officials expect the growth of acreage under peanuts, in reality, their size will depend on the prices of corn and soy.

The peanut harvest in the US is sold, but peanut prices for this season are still unknown, and buyers switched to peanuts from China (17.5 million tons) and India (5 million tons). Argentina delays delivery to Europe due to the quality, which requires re-processing.

Argentina's problems with the peanut crop in 2016 open the chance for the United States to strengthen its position in the European markets, but it is not easy to meet the EU's quality requirements.

USA

Due to the impact of bad weather during harvest, according to the final assessment, the peanut crop yield will be 2.84 million tons, which is 9% less than the previous estimate (3.2 million tons). At the end of the year, the carryover remains of peanuts in commercial storage were 1 977 663 tons against 2,431 255 tons a year earlier. Peanut proposals from the United States are limited due to the high level of aflatoxin. The lowest standardized price level for raw Ranner 40/50, meeting the requirements of the EU specifications, is $1,650/ton. Exporters do not offer peanuts for a new crop, but some sources report about $1,700/ton.

In the peanut market is quiet. There are rumors of the poor quality of peanuts and problems with supplies in the domestic market due to the too high humidity of beans.
