The leading positions among the biggest exporters of shrimp worldwide in 2016 stayed unchanged. Chinese, Ecuadorian, Indonesian, Indian, and Thai shrimps are the most popular in the countries that are unable to grow them. While the global stocks are stabilized, the shrimp suppliers in Asia struggled with a series of problems in the cropping season: unfavorable weather conditions, the problem of the spread of diseases, disadvantageous prices and a sales slowdown in the US.
China also reported on the reduction of the production of shrimp caused by the flare-up at fish farms. In addition, production in some southern Indian states has also decreased due to ictus. Inclement weather also led to a reduction in production in many countries.
In spite of these difficulties, the volume of delivery in India is balanced.
Indonesia has also kept the production at the level, about 620 thousand tons. Vietnamese authorities reported a decrease in this seafood harvest. Shrimp fisheries located on the Mekong River has suffered because of the spread of some dangerous bacteria for several months. The area under the cultivation of tiger shrimp broadened, but the output did not change greatly from the previous year.
Thailand this season has not suffered from any disasters in the prawn farming. A gradual but constant rise in the white shrimp farming was observed the whole last year, and this year's outcome is expected to exceed 300 thousand tons.
Ecuador and India, the leaders in this sphere, have increased exports of shrimp to the world market by 7.6% and 10.8% to 181 and 178 thousand tons respectively. Ecuador's main export destinations:
•Vietnam (80 thousand tons);
• Europe (44 thousand tons);
• the US (35 thousand tons).
Thailand restored its global market share and now ranks third in the world exports of shrimp. Shipments rose by 33% in the period from January to June 2016 in comparison with a similar interval of the previous year to 94 thousand tons. The key markets for Vietnamese shrimp are:
• the US;
• Japan;
• Vietnam;
• Hong Kong;
• Canada.
Indonesia followed by Thailand, with the export volume of 80 thousand tons (7%) in January-May. The main markets of Indonesian shrimp are:
• the US;
• EU;
• Japan;
• Malaysia;
• Vietnam.
Exports of shrimp to the United States from the Ecuadorian and Chinese shrimp fisheries grew by more than 26 percent year over year. Thus, the supply from Ecuador increased to 6.845 tons, while exports from China increased to 2.873 tons.
At the same time, the volume of US imports of shrimp from other countries that are part of the largest suppliers of these products to the US market fell. Thus, exports of shrimp to the United States of Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico decreased in volume by 6.7%, 2.1% and 13.4%, respectively. The average price of US imports of shrimp is $ 10.07 / kg.
