Siberian Licorice Glycyrrhiza uralensis It is a perennial herb, a universally recognized medicinal product. Glycyrrhiza uralensis - a source of licorice root - has been used in Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian traditional medicine since ancient times. It is used in conventional medicine as well. Licorice roots contain a lot of glycyrrhizic acid and chemical compounds ( triterpenoid saponins and flavonoids) possessing antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, wound-healthing, spasmolytic, choleretic, antiulcerous and other properties which are the basis for medical products. Moreover, licorice root is a technical raw material the derivative products of which are widely used in chemical, food and nonferrous-metals industry, construction and agriculture. Licorice roots are also the source of valuable biologically active substances used in pharmacology. Licorice roots contain such extractive substances as glycyrrhizic acid, fruit-sugar, saccharose, cellulose, ascorbic acid, flavonoids ( liquirtin, isoliquertin, liquiritoside and others), steroids, essential oil, mineral and tanning substances. In traditional medicine licorice is used to relieve respiratory system diseases, water metabolism and mineral turnover problems, peptic ulcer prevention and atherosclerosis. Licorice roots possess antihistaminic properties. They are used to prevent allergic eczema.
